My Dog Nearly Died
|Daisy our blond Labrador was at death’s door.
Recently my dog Daisy, who is an 8 year old Golden Labrador bitch fell very ill. She started by refusing to eat for 3 days, which is really weird for a Lab and then when we hand fed her she vomited up everything. My Dad took her to the vet and they did an ultra sound scan and they didn’t find anything so they kept her in for a few days so they could watch her, make her eat and rehydrate her.
After a few days they referred her to Dick White Referrals in New Market. They are a specialist kind of “consultant” vets and, among other things, they carried out a biopsy on Daisy’s liver. They put her on some drugs to help her keep the food down and they kept her in for nearly a week. When we went to pick Daisy up I went with Dad – he looked very sad as he handed over an awful lot of money – I’m sure I heard his credit card cry!
He had previously phoned up Nele Van den Steen; who had been looking after Daisy while she was there, anyway he phoned up and asked if it would be possible for me to have a quick look round because I would like to be a vet. Nele said that would be fine. So when we got there we got to look behind the scenes.
I saw: the x-ray room, operating theatre, hydro-therapy centre where there was a treadmill machine with glass walls around it so they could fill it with water, and the kennel area where they kept all the Dog’s and Cats. It was a great experience to see round a specialist animal ‘hospital’.
When we got Daisy home we had to give her loads of pills to help her liver. After a few days we got a call confirming with us that Daisy hadn’t got cancer but Chronic Hepatitis. She is on a daily dose of:
600mg of S-Adenosyl Methionine
150mg of Silybin
300mg of Ursodeoxycholic acid
25mg of Prednisolone
Because Daisy doesn’t like taking her pills we have to open her mouth and get them to the back of her tongue so she can’t spit them out and then hold her mouth shut. As a reward we give her little slices of frankfurter sausage (ewww they are foul!).
Great news – Daisy is so much better and isn’t going to die over Christmas – Loads of relos coming – happy days!
