Help Hives!

Flora came back from a Hack covered in Hives.

I went for a hack in the company of another horse and rider and at about the half way point Flora, my horse, started behaving strangely. We finally got back and almost before I got her saddle off she was rolling on the ground. And then I spotted the spots!

We lead her into the little sandy arena and she rolled and rolled. We called the vet and about an hour later poor old Flora looked like she had some dreadful pox. The lumps were all over her body, although by then she did seem a bit more comfortable. I guess the sandy rolling fixed the itching at least a bit.

The vet gave her a steroid injection and left us with a couple of oral doses, in case she wasn’t clear the next day. Anyway by the next day nearly all the lumps were gone and fingers crossed they won’t come back.

OCTOBER 2015 Update – it hasn’t happened since. So who knows what caused the hives?
